Simon Walker, Managing Director, Tameside Radio

(2004 - 2011)

"It's been a long-term goal of myself and the team to bring a dedicated, truly local station to this area and I am delighted that our vision has finally been realised. The team have moved mountains to get us on air and I am very proud and grateful to everybody involved.  The initial response has been absolutely tremendous".

SUPPORT LETTER FROM SANDRA MARSTON, JP

ON BEHALF OF DENTON SCOUT ASSOCIATION

"We were delighted to hear that Tameside Radio will be continuing the tradition of local community broadcasting which was pioneered by 8 Towns Radio...

"A not-for-profit, truly ‘local’ radio station, as proposed by Tameside Radio actively involving all sections of the community with its programming will be a great asset to the many voluntary youth and community groups in Tameside... "

Several ex- 8 Towns volunteers have gone on to present shows on Tameside Radio. Andy Hoyle, Steve Crumley and Wayne Kay were the regular daytime presenters when the station was launched in 2007

Mike Pav presented Pav's Patch, the local non-league football preview on Friday evenings until early 2014.

Some of the other familiar names heard on Tameside Radio over the past few years...

TAMESIDE'S new community radio station - with some familiar voices - first hit the airwaves with a trial FM broadcast  during May and June 2004.

Several former 8 Towns volunteers presented shows during the first trial broadcast including:

Andy Hoyle, Pete Meadows, Martyn Heelam, Gary Osborne, Mike Wallbank, Joe Douthwaite, Wayne Kay and Steve Crumley (aka Steve James as we first knew him!)

Fast forward to October 2005 and the fantastic news that many of us had waited 10, even 20 years to hear: Ofcom (the radio licensing authority) agreed to award the group a full-time community radio licence.

Meanwhile, we were already extending our horizons by broadcasting "from the Cyber Cafe in Hattersley to the world" via the internet.

From September 2005 until early 2006, Tameside Web Radio was available to anyone who wished to listen online via the worldwide web - including Tameside 'ex-pats' now living outside the area, or even overseas!

Speaking of which... a former Ashtonian now based in Canada presented a weekly show on the station - none other than former 8 Towns Radio volunteer Phil Loftus, who hosted the aptly-named 'Atlantic Crossing' direct from his home in Toronto.

Finally, after many, many negotiations to secure start-up funds and premises, with several twists and turns and frustrating delays, the new full-time station Tameside Radio began broadcasting on Sunday 30 September, 2007.
